Getting Retainers
After Braces
After you get your braces off or complete your Invisalign series, the retention stage of treatment begins. We offer retainers to keep your smile straight, healthy, and beautiful, so you can avoid further orthodontic treatment down the road.
Types of Retainers
We offer three types of retainers at Henry Advanced Orthodontics.
Most patients choose between the metal and acrylic Hawley retainer or the clear plastic Essix retainer for a convenient, removable option. Others prefer a permanent retainer, which is glued to the back of your teeth to preserve your smile for years to come.
Guidelines for your Retainer After Braces
Retainers are a one-time investment and preserve your healthy smile for the rest of your life. For best results, Dr. Henry will probably suggest that you initially wear your retainer full-time for a few weeks, removing it only to eat or brush and floss your teeth. After the recommended time period, you can wear your retainer only at night.
For easy maintenance and to ensure your removable retainer lasts, clean it once per day with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You can also soak it in denture cleaner occasionally to ensure freshness. When you’re not wearing your retainer, handle it carefully and store it safely in its case. Do not put your retainer in hot water or leave it in a hot environment, or the plastic could melt and become so warped that it no longer fits.
