So, whether you’re just starting or have had yours for quite some time, knowing how to manage pain and discomfort is essential.

As a trusted orthodontist in St. Augustine and St. John’s, Florida, we understand the pain you might be experiencing and put together a list of 6 tips to diminish that discomfort.

6 Ways to Diminish Clear Aligners Discomfort

Use Orthodontic Wax

Orthodontic wax is a great product for alleviating irritation caused by the rough or sharp edges of your clear aligners. Apply a small amount of wax to the areas causing the trouble to create a smooth surface that prevents ongoing irritation and provides relief.

Follow Your Treatment Schedule

A benefit of clear aligners is that they’re discreet, and you can easily remove them and put them back in. But do your best to resist the temptation to remove yours for extended periods of time, especially when they’re causing discomfort.

It’s worth noting when you experience temporary discomfort, it’s likely a sign that your teeth are shifting into the proper position.

Stick to your treatment schedule to achieve your desired results.

Have Good Oral Hygiene Habits

Proper and consistent brushing and flossing help prevent bacterial buildup, which can aggravate discomfort. Check out our blog post, How to Maintain Great Oral Hygiene During Orthodontic Treatment for more information and helpful tips!

Use Over-the-Counter Pain Medication When Needed

Pain relievers such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen are good options to consider when the discomfort of your clear aligners becomes too much. Follow the dosing instructions and contact your orthodontist if the pain persists.

Try Cold Treatment

Especially early on in the treatment process, swelling and inflammation are common side effects. Applying cold to the outside of your mouth can reduce swelling and numb the areas that are causing discomfort. Keep the ice on your face for 15 minutes at a time.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water can help alleviate discomfort when wearing clear aligners. Proper hydration keeps moisture in the mouth, reducing friction between your aligners and gums. We suggest primarily drinking water. However, if you choose to drink something else besides plain water, always remove your aligners first.
